  1. Wildlife Watching: One of the top destinations on Vancouver Island for wildlife viewing including Grey, Humpback and Killer Whales ( Orcas ) roaming the Pacific Ocean on Ucluelet's front door. Each spring thousands of Grey Whales past by the Pacific Rim coastline as they migrate from Baja Mexico to the Bering Sea in the Arctic. To celebrate the migration of the Grey Whales each year the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet hold the Pacific Rim Whale Festival in March. It is all uphill from there on it. Hiking the trails, paddling an ocean kayak or cruising in a boat will all provide an ideal opportunity for viewing various wildlife including Black Bears, Bald Eagles, Sea Lions, Porpoises, Red Tail Hawks and other marine, land and air wildlife. (tour companies available in Ucluelet).

  2. Hot Springs Cove: A 1 - 1.5 hour beautiful scenic cruise by water taxi through ocean inlets and ocean channels through Clayoquot Sound takes you to a short hiking trail that leads to Hot Springs Cove. There are float plane tours and kayak tours to the Hot Springs. Travel time varies to Hot Spring Cove depending on the mode of transportation. The ocean boat cruise takes you past ancient First Nation's Villages, eroded ocean sea caves, rainforests and much wildlife. The boardwalk trail is 2 kilometres long and opens up to the cascading hot pools of Hot Spring Cove.

  3. Ocean Fishing: Ucluelet has some local guiding companies. Many guides in the area know the local waters very well which increases your chances of catching the fish of choice whether it be a Salmon, Halibut, bottom fish, etc. Check with local guiding companies of when the fishing seasons open and close for a particular type of fishing. Guiding companies supply all the gear and sometimes lunches. Bring your fishing hat and your lucky bait and hook to catch the big one. Must purchase a fishing licence.
  4. Boating: The Pacific Rim area is a popular destination for boaters. The Broken Islands Group, Barclay Sound and Clayoquot Sound are all at Ucluelet's door step. There are boat launches, marinas and marine supply stores located in Ucluelet.
  5. Hiking and Walking: All within minutes...you could be on one of the local trails like the Wild Pacific Trail . Some trails in the Pacific Rim are boardwalk paths while others are gravel and roots. Most follow ocean shorelines or dissect through forests and lead to long sandy beaches. The trails range in difficulty combining hills, stairs, boardwalk, ladders, mud and roots. Always prepare for weather with good hiking boots, flashlight and rain gear. Be prepared also to dress warmly as weather can change quickly on the west coast.

  6. Beach Worshipping:The Pacific Rim area has many ocean beaches to enjoy long walks with waves crashing, birds singing and people swimming. Long Beach is the longest and most popular. But there are so many others available for beach walks like Combers Beach, Wickaninnish Beach, McKenzie Beach and Chesterman Beach. Lots of sand to go around for play or a sunset romance... wink, wink.... maybe sunrise too. ... all in the name of good mental therapy.

  7. Surfing: Ucluelet surfing is ideal because of the close proximity to the Pacific Rim National Park beaches. The Ucluelet Village has a surf shop with guides and surf camps. Ucluelet is a great place to hang loose. Lots of waves to go around for everyone. Pacific Rim National Park is a short 20 minute drive away. Catch the big one with the scenic background of the rainforest cheering you on.

  8. Sea Kayaking: Paddle the shoreline of Barclay Sound or zig zag through The Broken Islands Marine Group feeling alive exploring the rugged marine wilderness. Paddle till your hearts content... plenty of ocean around here.

  9. Canoeing : Great area for the canoeist, except you need to bring your own canoe. You may want to check your equipment prior to your arrival, in Port Alberni, as there are no rentals in Ucluelet. Like they say, have canoe will travel. Out on the west coast there is a huge fresh water lake with many coves, bays and river inlets to explore by canoe near Ucluelet called Kennedy Lake.

  10. Storm Watching: Relax and sit back to the crashing waves battering the coastline with the skies bursting with thunder and lightening imprinting beautiful "postcard" images in your mind. Electrical natural forces creating majestic moments in time. A sight to see. A sight you will never forget!
