- Wildlife Watching: One
of the top destinations on Vancouver Island for wildlife viewing
including Grey, Humpback and Killer Whales ( Orcas ) roaming
the Pacific Ocean on Ucluelet's front door. Each spring thousands
of Grey Whales past by the Pacific Rim coastline as they migrate
from Baja Mexico to the Bering Sea in the Arctic. To celebrate
the migration of the Grey Whales each year the communities
of Tofino and Ucluelet hold the Pacific Rim Whale Festival
in March. It is all uphill from there on it. Hiking the trails,
paddling an ocean kayak or cruising in a boat will all provide
an ideal opportunity for viewing various wildlife including
Black Bears, Bald Eagles, Sea Lions, Porpoises, Red Tail Hawks
and other marine, land and air wildlife. (tour companies available

- Beach Worshipping: The
Pacific
Rim area has many ocean beaches to enjoy long walks with
waves crashing, birds singing and people swimming. Chesterman
Beach and MacKenzie Beach is the popular beaches in Tofino.
But there are so many others available for beach walks in
the Pacific Rim Park like Combers Beach and Wickaninnish Beach.
Lots of sand to go around for play or a sunset romance...
wink, wink.... maybe sunrise too. ... all in the name of good
mental therapy.
- Ocean
Fishing: Tofino has some local guiding companies. Many
guides in the area know the local waters very well which increases
your chances of catching the fish of choice whether it be
a Salmon, Halibut, bottom fish, etc. Check with local guiding
companies of when the fishing seasons open and close for a
particular type of fishing. Guiding companies supply
all the gear and sometimes lunches. Bring your fishing hat
and your lucky bait and hook to catch the big one. Must purchase
a fishing licence.
- Boating: The Pacific Rim
area is a popular destination for boaters. The Broken
Islands Group, Barclay Sound and Clayoquot
Sound are all at Tofino's door step.
There are boat launches, marinas and marine supply stores
located in Tofino.
- Hiking
and Walking: All within minutes...you could be on one
of the local trails like the Tonquin
Beach Trail . Some
trails in the Pacific Rim are boardwalk paths while others
are gravel and roots. Most follow ocean shorelines or dissect
through forests and lead to long sandy beaches. The trails
range in difficulty combining hills, stairs, boardwalk, ladders,
mud and roots. Always prepare for weather with good hiking
boots, flashlight and rain gear. Be prepared also to dress
warmly as weather can change quickly on the west coast.
- Floatplane Tours: See the
Pacific Rim and Clayoquot Sound from the air. It is breath
taking. There are floatplane operators who offer tours to
some of the remote islands, hiking trails, surfing coves and
fly fishing lakes. There are regular floatplane guided tours
escorting groups out to Meares and Flores Islands for some
wilderness hiking trips.
- Surfing: Radical suspension man! Ride
the famous waves and vertical lifts of the west coast with
the pacific rainforest in the foreground. There are rental
companies in the community who offer quality lessons and guides.
Some surf company operators offer Surf Camp Getaways also.
That is if surfing is your thing.
- Sea Kayaking: Paddle the shoreline
of Clayoquot
Sound and Meares Island interacting with nature like you
have never imagined. It is rugge, peaceful and beautiful.
Ocean breezes, eagles flying over head and the fresh salted
air ought to be enough to convince you that Vancouver Island
is a treasure map of adventure. So... paddle on the secret
is out.
- Hot
Springs Cove: A 1 - 1.5 hour beautiful scenic cruise
by water taxi through ocean inlets and ocean channels through
Clayoquot Sound takes you to a short hiking trail that leads
to Hot Springs Cove. There are float plane tours and kayak
tours to the Hot Springs. Travel time varies to Hot Spring
Cove depending on the mode of transportation. The ocean boat
cruise takes you past ancient First Nation's Villages, eroded
ocean sea caves, rainforests and much wildlife. The boardwalk
trail is 2 kilometres long and opens up to the cascading hot
pools of Hot Spring Cove.
- Cougar Annie's Garden: Ada
Annie Rae-Arthur loved her privacy and the life that the outdoors
brought her. She started what is today, one of the best collections
of a countless varieties of plants from all across Canada.
The trails lead through the fields of the nursery leading
to the Temperate Rainforest Field Study Centre. Only a limited
number of people can be accommodated at one time. Cougar Annie's
Garden is accessed by boat or floatplane only.
- Storm Watching: Crashing waves, gusting
winds shadowed by rolling clouds belting out thunder and striking
with lightening. Nature's amazing electrical power imploding
and exploding releasing it's forces with all it's might. Singing
in the rain has a whole different meaning... ohhhhhhhh, what
a feeling it is to be happy again! A must see experience while
enjoying the comforts of one of the many accommodations.
