Mateoja Heritage Trail
The Mateoja Heritage Trail is located on Malcolm Island, British Columbia, Canada. Malcolm Island is situated off the northern east coast of Vancouver Island near the community of Port McNeill, BC.
The 3.2 kilometre hiking trail is a great way to explore the many highlights located on the island. The rugged trail leads explorers to a popular local swimming hole named Big Lake, a marsh which is ideal for birdwatching and some viewing benches. The route is enjoyed by walkers, joggers and mountain bikers.
The Mateoja Heritage Trail is also part of the island's history as it passes through a 1900's pioneer homestead. The entire return route is considered an easy grade hike that should take no linger than 3- 3.5 hours to complete.
How to Get to Mateoja Heritage Trail
Travel Highway 19 to the community of Port McNeill on the north end of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. In Port McNeill there is a ferry terminal transporting people and vehicles to Sointula on Malcolm Island. Once on Malcolm Island proceed to Third Street. The trailhead is located on the street near the ferry dock. |
