- Salmon Fishing. Almost every morning the fishing boats are cruising through the morning mist in San Juan Bay for a day of salmon and halibut fishing. Some are local recreational fisherman, others trollers. Followed closely by fishing charter boats and guides entertaining visiting fisherman. Swiftsure Bank is a popular fishing area in the region.
- Backpacking. There are two very well known backpacking adventures in the Port Renfrew area. The 74 kilometre West Coast Trail (WCT) is a world famous backpacking trail exploring the coastline of Vancouver Island. Another backpacking trail along the coastline is the 47 kilometre Juan de Fuca Trail.
- Trout Fishing. Fish by canoe or non motorized boat on a lake like Fairy and Lizard Lakes. Or hike a riverbank to some pools and fly fish like on the San Juan and Gordon Rivers.
- Beachcombing. There are plenty of beaches to explore in the region. Most are sandy beaches like French, Port Renfrew and Sombrio Beaches and one is a sandstone flat rock beach with tidal pools called Botanical
Beach.
- Ocean Kayaking. There are plenty of bays and coves to explore by kayak in the Port Renfrew area. However prepare well for storms and rain with weather and tidal charts.
- Wildlife Watching. Self guided tours along the West Coast and Juan de Fuca Hiking Trails often provide views of marine wildlife like eagles, osprey, whales, seals and sea lions. There are also guided wildlife boat charters operating in the community that will take you on the water for a wildlife sightseeing tour.
- Hiking. Easy to difficult hiking trails in the region. The loop trails near Fairy and Lizard Lake are easy route hikes. Hook up with the West Coast Trail or Juan de Fuca Trail for some rainforest hiking under difficult conditions.
- Swimming. Swim fresh water lakes like Lizard and Fairy Lakes and rivers like the San Juan and Gordon Rivers. Swim the ocean on a hot summer day from any beach located near the waterfront community.
