West Coast Trail, Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Botanical Loop Trail
Port Renfrew, British
Columbia, Canada Parks & Trails... includes
some of the west coast's most challenging backpacking
and hiking trails. The southern trailhead to the "world
famous" West Coast Trail and the northern
trailhead to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail are
in Port Renfrew. Also in the wilderness back
country of Port Renfrew are many other smaller
day hikes, lake hikes, and wilderness trail areas to explore.
Trails will vary in degree of difficulty and terrain. Some park
fees may apply. |
- West
Coast Trail: Backpacking with wildlife, washing in
waterfalls, wading rivers, navigating tides and crashing surf
and climbing ladders up rock cliffs... an ultimate test of
will and determination on one of the worlds toughest backpacking
adventures. From around the world they travel, the adventure
backpacking seekers, to experience this 74 kilometre rugged
wilderness trail walking beaches, plunging through dense rainforest
along boardwalk trails, through mud swamps, navigating rocky
shorelines, climbing ladders and crossing rivers. A thrill

- Botanical
Beach Loop Trail: a 1 kilometre hike to Botanical
Beach where a world of tide pools are on display. Massive
stockpiles of driftwood, marine birds and solitude. Take the
Botanical Loop Trail (2.4 kilometres) and visit Botany Bay
and other private bays on your way to Botanical Beach. Check
tide tables. Trailhead located 1.5 kilometres from Port Renfrew

- Carmanah
Walbran: Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is
a mix-mash of wilderness forest ecosystems. An absolute natural
treat for the eyes. The hiking trails, although rough and
challenging, take you on a trip through Sitka Spruce eco-systems
covering the skyline reaching up to 100 metres in the air
and have like over 800 rings (years old) to there name!

- French Beach
Provincial Park: French Beach is a popular spot
for families and locals in the summer time. Many of which
take the advantage of the opportunity to go swimming. All
year it is a great spot to watch wildlife change with the
seasons. There are often photographers and bird watchers with
binoculars hoping to catch a sighting of their favourite marine
moment.

- Juan
de Fuca Marine Trail: Another long haul backpacking
trail taking the adventure seeker exploring the shorelines
of the West Coast along beaches, cliffs, dense rainforests
for 47 kilometres. A smaller version of the West Coast Trail
with some interesting twists. Trailheads located at Botanical
Beach Parking Lot in Port Renfrew and China Beach (45 kilometres
south of Port Renfrew).

- Red Creek Fir Trail: Get this! The
largest standing Douglas Fir tree in Canada is the prize at
the end of the 14 km dirt road hike/bike. Not suitable for
cars as many areas over grown. Mountain bike or walk access
only. The tree is estimated at 800-1000 years old and is 41
feet around. 3 km drive south of Port Renfrew to gravel road
turnoff.
- Len's Creek Trail: 3.8 kilometre trail
through untouched rainforests surrounded by some of the long
standing local giants - like the Western Hemlock Trees, red
cedar and Sitka Spruce. Many little Sand Bars to stop and
relax at - perfect swimming holes. Located just south of Lizard
Lake.
- Lizard Lake Nature Trail:
1.5 kilometre trail located at Lizard Lake Recreational Campground
and swimming hole. Short easy walking trails through forested
trails with decaying logs and heavy undergrowth making for
some detours.
- Harris Creek Camp Trail: A good mud
hiking 6 kilometre loop trail filled with adventure through
thick forests, fording rivers crossing paths enjoying historic
mining artifacts on route to the remains of a 1920's logging
camp. Located at the gravel pit off the Granite Creek Main
Line Road south of Port Renfrew.
- Fairy Creek Nature Trail: 1.5
kilometre trail circling Fairy Lake. Forested eco-system with
ferns, tons of salal and wildlife of all sorts.
- Sombrio Beach: Beach made
for surfing or just sitting back and beach worship. Located
25 kilometres south of Port Renfrew. Gravel road turn off
leads to a short 10 minute walk to beach.
- Loss Creek Swimming Hole: Swimming
hole off the main hwy with sunbathing boulders and clear calm
swimming hole conditions located just 20 kilometres south
of Port Renfrew.
