Mount Cain Ski Resort is located on the northern portion of Vancouver Island in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The ski hill is Vancouver Island's second snow mountain destination for winter recreation. Mount Cain is a smaller mountain, compared to the bigger Mt. Washington ski resort... but Cain still draws plenty of attention by locals and visitors alike looking for smaller crowds, untouched wilderness and virgin white snow ideal for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Mt. Cain is rated as one of the best smaller powder ski hills in British Columbia, Canada. Ski Canada, recently ranked Mt. Cain as the "5th best in powder ski conditions in Canada". Not too bad for a small locally run ski hill operated by volunteers and open usually, just on weekends from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. Mt. Cain is the single largest employer of our north island youths during the ski season.

From Monday to Thursday the ski hill sits untouched accumulating many inches of the white stuff. So, naturally, on the weekends skiers are treated to beautiful, pristine ski slopes covered in fresh, powder snow.

Mount Cain ski hill first was skied in 1978 by a group of individuals who ventured out onto the West Bowl of local northern mountain. In the 1980's a 700 foot T-bar was built for skiing to accommodate the beginning and intermediate skilled skiers. But the challenging ski runs were farther up the slopes of Mt. Cain, best accessed by snowmobiles.

In 1986 a second T-bar was built to extend the vertical height to 1500 feet accommodating all skiers. Mt. Cain has over 18 ski runs today. Mt Cain just does not cater to skiers and snowboarders only either... no way ... it is also home to pristine snow conditions, perfectly suited, especially the West Bowl of Mount Cain, for the cross country and snowshoeing adventurers.

A skiers lodge is on Mt. Cain for day use only. A limited selection of accommodations are also available on Mt. Cain. There are rental cabins that cater to large groups of skiers sleeping 6-10 people. There are also some privately owned ski chalets for rental and Hostel accommodations.

Mt Cain is a secret too many in BC, but locally it is a getaway with healthy atmosphere. Mount Cain should not be attempted unless with a 4x4 vehicle. The gravel logging roads are rough at times and in peak season the roads are intermittently plowed so chains would be a very good idea.

Mt. Cain is no glitzy resort with thrills and frills. It has a small town feel, is in the rugged wilderness and remote... a place you feel good about yourself all the time. The ski hill is located on the northern portion of Vancouver Island just outside the village of Woss between the northern wilderness communities of Port McNeill, BC and Campbell River, BC.
