Port Alberni, Vancouver
Island, British Columbia, Canada is
an eco-tourism utopia for the outdoor fanatic. There are bountiful
forests, rivers and lakes with access to the ocean. The west coast
community of Port Alberni, BC has many adventures
to experience like Kayaking, Fishing and Hiking the
coves, inlets and bays of Alberni Inlet. Pacific
Rim National Park is not far and the Broken Islands Group
is a famous boating and kayaking marine park.
The many coves on some of the scenic marine tours are prime for watching
Whales, Sea Lions, Porpoises and Bald Eagles.

- Ocean and Lake Fishing: Known for its
quality fishing from the surrounding lakes, nearby rivers and
up and down the Alberni Inlet. Trolling the coast line, marinas
hugging the shores, eagles soaring overhead while anxious fishermen
placing bait on their hooks and casting their line waiting to
catch the next big one.
- M.V. Lady Rose: For over 60 years the
world renowned, M.V. Lady Rose and the M.V. Frances Barkley
have traveled the West Coast from Port Alberni and into Barkley
Sound to Bamfield-the home of the famous West Coast Trail- or
the scenery of the rough wilderness of The Broken Islands to
Ucluelet returning to the comfort of your chosen accommodation
by late afternoon. A beautiful scenic tour with tons of eye-candy.
- Hiking and Walking: Casual walk down
by the big clock on Harbour Quay along the seawall among the
unique restaurants and shops taking in the fountain and the
wood carvings. One might venture a short distance outside the
city and hike among the 800 year old Sitka Spruce, Red Cedar
and Douglas Fir trees at Cathedral Grove Park.
- McLean Mill: Forestry is a big part of
Port Alberni's past and present. Take a trip back into time
and see Canada's only steam operated sawmill. The atmosphere,
the historic machinery, the simple living conditions that these
unique lumber men created in the middle of the rainforest.
- Backpacking: Think you got the "umph"
to take on Mount Arrowsmith? Walk the ridges, track through
fields and forests, relax in the winds among the eagles looking
down from the mountain tops. A long hike of wilderness beauty
so plan your time accordingly or live life in the wilderness
with your house on your back... taking in the scenery. Don't
ya just luv it!
- Golf: Work on your short game at the
local 9 hole golf course or go for broke and try your luck on
the 18 hole course. Bring your handicap card people - you might
need to make some adjustments to the score card.
- Lake Sports: Jet ski, get whipped around
on a tube, take a romantic canoe trip along the shores strolling
the beach or soaking in some sun at Sproat Lake. A recreation
playground for families and home to the Mars Water Bombers.
- Sea and River Kayaking: Whatever your
fancy... from up and down the coastline of the Alberni Inlet
to the sometime surging currents of the Somass River. Paddle
the shoreline or tackle the rapids. Plenty of bays and sandy
shores to take in the abundance of wildlife.
- Alberni Valley Museum: Artifacts from
native cultures, historical photographs and local history of
the machinery of industries like forestry and fishing. An interesting
assortment of folk art and often there are traveling exhibits
on display.
- Steam Train Rides: All aboard! Get your
ticket from the restored 1912 railway station and hop the train
as the logging locomotive No. 7 takes you chugging along some
historical rails through the scenic wilderness of the Alberni
Valley to McLean Mill
