Victoria Galloping Goose Regional Park & Trail
Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

Galloping Goose Regional Park is the first trail system in Canada to transform from a historic railroad route to a multi-use hiking trail system. A unique program of protecting forest lands by converting what use to be a railway line transporting goods and passengers since the 1930's to 1979 . In the early day the rail car that was transporting the passengers was called "The Galloping Goose".

The Galloping Goose Trail sprawls along backyard rural neighbourhoods and fields, cutting through forests, humping over bridges and trestles while peering down over rocky cliffs and rushing rivers. The Galloping Goose Trail enjoys the yellows, reds, oranges and greens in the spring and in the autumn.

For over 60 kilometres the Galloping Goose Trail explores the forest lands west of Victoria. The Goose is a well maintained trail filled with many wilderness eco-systems to explore.

The Goose is an ideal trail for all ages including families with children. The Galloping Goose can be experienced on foot, bike and horseback for most of the way. It is a heavily used trail so do be polite and stay right at all times.

The Galloping Goose starts in Victoria and winds its way through the community of Saanich. The forests then start to thicken as you make your way further along to Sooke following the Sooke River. At this point one should visit the popular swimming hole called the "Sooke Potholes". The long hiking trail has many access points and exit points. The trail can be explored very easily in smaller pieces.

Some of the highlights of the trail and the surrounding area is Roche Cove Regional Park and Matheson Lake. There is no camping along the trail. It is mainly for day use only. Please do not litter or loiter, but feel free to enjoy!
