- Shopping. Nanaimo has the largest concentration of shopping malls on Vancouver Island. They include a large selection of specialty shops, retail stores, gift stores, restaurants and big box stores in the community.
- Theatre and Art. There is a large performing arts community in Nanaimo. There are theatres, art galleries and art exhibits throughout the community. The Nanaimo Port Theatre is a well recognized theatre house.
- Sightseeing Downtown. Artifacts, ferries and marinas line the waterfront. The oldest remaining Hudson Bay Fort in North America is downtown. There are canons, anchors, flags, monuments, floating piers and a ferry to Newcastle Island.
- Pedestrian Ferries. There are two pedestrian-only ferries located downtown transporting people to two of the small islands just off the coast of Nanaimo. One ferry transport people to the picnic and hiking island of Newcastle Island and the other connects to Protection Island - home to the floating Dingy Dock Pub.
- Hiking. There are plenty of hiking trails in Nanaimo ranging from difficult to easy - from short to long. Some of the more popular hiking destinations include Pipers lagoon, Neck Point Park and the Parkway Trail. It all depends on what you want to do and see.
- Scuba Diving. Divers explore Dodd's Narrow, Nanoose Bay, Clarke Rock, Neck Point and the waters off of Gabriola and Snake Islands. Near Snake Island are two sunken ships - the 366' naval destroyer HMCS Saskatchewan and
the 441' 'Victory' HMCS Cape Brenton.
- Ocean Kayaking. There are many launch sites in Nanaimo. Some of the kayak destinations include the bays and coves around Newcastle, Protection and Gabriola Islands.
- Fishing. Salmon and halibut fishing. Charters operate from the community. There are boat launches located along the coastline. Must have a fishing license.
- Boating and Sailing. Nanaimo is a major port along the inside passage for long haul cruises. Some are heading out on day trips and others depart for long haul overnight trips to such destinations as Desolation Sound or Princess Louise Inlet.
- Golfing. There are many golf courses in Nanaimo. The community is within a short drive to more golf courses located in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
