Low Tides on Departure Bay Beach
Departure Bay Beach. Set in a horseshoe shaped cove. During low tides the waters recede back into the ocean revealing small tidal pools and marine life. Activities enjoyed at the beach include swimming, beachcombing and kayaking. [ more information ]
Ferry to Newcastle Island
Newcastle Island Park. The island is only accessed by boat, kayak or pedestrian ferry. The island facilities include a campground & day-use/picnic area with a playground, picnic tables, information shelter, swimming beach, toilets and horseshoe pits. [ more information ]
  • Bowen Park. A 36 hectare park popular for many activities including swimming, birdwatching, tennis, picnicking, curling, hiking, disc golf, baseball and lawn bowling. [ more information ]
  • Buttertubs Marsh. Buttertubs Marsh is a birding and hiking conservation area located in Nanaimo, BC. The marsh is a man made estuary extending over 40 hectares (100 acres). The Buttertubs Marsh portion of the conservation area is 18.7 hectares (46 acres). [ more information ]
  • Morrell Nature Park. The 113 hectare (278 acres) birdwatching park includes a lake, beaver pond, hiking trails, lookout platforms, marshes and plenty of second growth forest. Some of the activities enjoyed in the park include hiking, birdwatching, picnicking, fishing and sightseeing. [ more information ]
  • Neck Point Park. The park includes a well maintained, easy grade trail system with some of good views of the Strait of Georgia, Coastal Mountains and Mount Baker. Neck Point Park is home to Sunset Beach, Last Beach, Indian Beach and Finn Beach. Activities in the park include hiking, scuba diving, wildlife watching, kayaking, swimming and picnicking.   • Parkway Trail. A 20 kilometre paved path connecting south Nanaimo near Cedar to north Nanaimo near the ``Welcome to Nanaimo`` sign at Mary Ellen Drive. The trail is a popular activity route for biking, hiking, dog walking, roller bladding and jogging. [ more information ]
  • Petroglyph Park. The 2 hectare park is ideal for enjoying marine ocean views and is also the site of prehistoric and First Nation carvings and drawings. Located south of Nanaimo the park is situated where the Nanaimo River merges into the Northumberland Channel. The site was once a place of worship for the Snuneymuxw First Nation people.   • Pipers Lagoon Park. A 8 hectare hiking park for sightseeing and beachcombing near the community of Nanaimo, BC . The waterfront park trail follows a rocky coastline and a dyke before leading out to an isthmus ( rocky point ). The park provides views of Georgia Strait and of the Coastal Mountains on the mainland. [ more information ]
  • Westwood Lake Park. A 50 hectare day use park with a sandy beach, swimming area with a floating dock, picnic tables, playground, boat launch and a large network of hiking and biking trails. The lake is a popular destination for swimming, canoeing, fishing for trout, hiking, jogging, dog walking, mountain biking and sightseeing. [ more information ]
  • Cable Bay Trail. Hike 1.9 km out to a bay and maybe see some sea lions and eagles. Wood chip trail is easy going and takes maybe 40 minutes. Located south of the Duke Point Hwy.
  • Collier Dam Park. Hiking trails exploring a 28 hectre park including a day use swimming area and picnic site. Trail systems interact with Trans Canada Trail and the Parkway Trail. Access from Harewood Mines Rd.
  • Diver Lake Park. Fitness circuit trail, walking paths, picnicking, playground and a dock. Lots to do and areas to relax. Take Shenton Rd. to Labieux Rd.
  • Hailey Rhododendron Grove. Gardens and walking paths. 350 rhododendrons, primarily hybrids. Great assortment of colors and smells. Access from Bowen Road.
  • Jack Point/Biggs Park. Located near Duke Point. Hiking trails exploring beaches and forests. Good views of islands and the city of Nanaimo. Access off of the Duke Point Ferry Rd.
  • Millstone Trailway. Hiking trail follows the Millstone River for 2.8 km. Excellent ride for cyclists and comfortable walk for hikers. Access at Maffeo-Sutton Park or quarterway bridge by Bowen Park.
  • Swy-A-Lana Lagoon & Maffeo-Sutton Park. Saltwater lagoon with grass lawns, walkway, picnic area, fishing pier and a bridge from the lagoon to the park area. Access from right downtown Nanaimo on Stewart St.
