Some of the best mountain biking trail routes, mountain bike parks and mountain bike logging roads are located on Vancouver Island,BC, Canada. Mountain biking in general is vastly becoming a top draw for many when exploring the backwood areas of the islands. The trail routes lead bikers through lush rainforest valleys, climbing up mountains, crossing roaring rivers, circling around pristine lakes and biking along ocean coastlines. Some biking trails climb to the top of mountain summits while others descend down to remote sandy beaches on the shores of lakes and oceans. Like most areas of British Columbia, the island, has a deep history in the forest and mining industries. And in developing those industries roads and rail lines were cut through the forests and used to transport the logs for the forest companies. So... years ago the ground work establishing the network of mountain biking trails was laid. Many of these rail road beds and gravel roads are discontinued, deactivated routes now and have been transformed into mountain bike trails. A mountain bike touring guide is often the best way to experience the wilderness because of their familiarity of the trail routes and the remote wilderness camp sites. Mountain biking companies offer various services. Some mountain biking companies include a guide, supplying bikes and equipment while others provide, to the experienced rider, trail maps only. Many tour groups offer half day, full day and multi day wilderness camping mountain biking trips. Experienced bikers, with the proper equipment and maps, have plenty of roads, hiking trails and rail lines to explore. Some of the more popular destinations for mountain biking on the island are found near the communities of Victoria, Duncan, Cumberland and Courtenay. All mountain bikers be aware that the west coast is rugged and beautiful.... and weather can be moody in the early spring and late fall months. Some bouts of weather have been known to create floods washing out bridges. Fallen trees from wind storms could be blocking all routes in and out. A local mountain bike shop knows the current conditions and the alternatives around these opportunities thrown at us by nature. It is important to keep your head up while exploring the trail systems as many of the mountain bike trails are shared routes also used by hikers, dirt bikers and horseback riders. We encourage all mountain biking trips to be done with safety in mind which will ensure a high level of excitement without incident.
