South Gulf Islands – The
Gulf Islands is a matrix of inhabited islands
located on the south-western corner of British Columbia,
Canada. The islands attract many boaters to the region
for the opportunity to see the many limestone cliffs, the forests
of Arbutus
trees, the abundance of marine wildlife
and to spend some time in any of the island villages.
Trees, small villages, laid back atmosphere and
the many sandy pebbled beaches attracts many boaters to the marinas
located within the Gulf Islands. In the summer and early fall
months, the marinas are busy and many boaters are forced to set
anchor in one of the nearby sheltered bays, inlets, channels or
coves.
The Gulf
Islands National Park , is a gem of a marine park
with opportunities for viewing sea birds, seals, sea lions, otters,
whales and dolphins. The large migratory sea bird population,
the fragile marine eco system and the many marine animals in the
region played a big part in establishing the Gulf Islands National
Park. Many Boaters arrive for an opportunity
to view some of our rare west coast marine birds patrolling the
skies and for a chance to see a whale
breach in the distance. It is all
part of the experience of cruising around the southern Gulf
Islands.
The southern Gulf Island region
includes the islands of Gabriola Island located
off the coast of Nanaimo to the more southern
Gulf Islands like Saltspring Island,
Mayne Island, Galiano Island, Saturna Island and Pender
Island.
The island region is ideal for boating
because of the many marinas available ranging from open water
moorage to deluxe facilities with many extras. The marinas available
vary in capacity, from one boat to a hundreds of boats.
The southern Gulf Islands tidal
currents can reach 4 knots and in the spring some ocean channel
passes reach up to 9 knots. Because of the many channels and tidal
currents of the region it is imperative to have the proper tidal
and navigation charts when boating the southern
portion of the Gulf Islands.
The popular destinations in the southern Gulf Islands
include the undeveloped, rural D'Arcy Island Marine Park, Sidney
Spit, Princess Margaret Marine Park, Beaumont Marine Park,
Winter Cove, Cabbage Island Marine Park, Prevost Island and Montague
Harbour Marine Park.
Plan accordingly as availability of moorage at the marinas during
the peak summer months is limiting on the southern Gulf
Islands when the capacity is at its highest.
