Vancouver Island, British Columbia,
Canada
Boating and sailing the west coast of Vancouver Island is a wilderness sightseeing trip of a lifetime. There are islands, sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, wildlife, private coves and remote sandy beaches. The waterways and tides of the Pacific Ocean provide an endless supply of marine adventures to all who explore by boat.
Vancouver Island is the largest island located
on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. Located off the coast of Vancouver Island are more smaller islands and protected marine parks. In total there are over 6000 islands up and down the coast of British Columbia. It is a wilderness maze of islands that makes for great boating, sailing and kayaking.
During the summer months the waterways, channels and ocean passages around Vancouver Island are very busy with marine traffic. Some of the marine traffic includes recreational boats, commercial fishing vessels, barges, sailboats, cruise ships, tug boats, Coast Guard ships, BC Ferries and sightseeing wildlife tour boats.
The secluded coves and protected bays along the coastline are dotted with marinas, boat houses, piers and docks. In most cases a community is very close by.
Tours and overnight cruises on private yachts and sailboats depart from some of the Vancouver Island communities. Many of the island communities provide day tours for wildlife viewing.
The larger marinas may provide services like showers, power hook-ups, gas , internet
access, supply shops, boat repair, pubs, fish stations, freezer storage and restaurants. In many cases the more remote your boating and sailing adventure gets the less services the marina has. There are bare bone marinas with basic moorage only located along some of the remote island routes.
Every year many boaters arrive in BC with their own recreational water
craft in tow. While others decide to arrive by water via the Pacific Ocean. The best months for boating are between April and October. The summer months
of July and August being the most popular. They are also the months most hardest to secure moorage at a marina.
When boating around Vancouver Island beware that the waters are heavily populated with sharp reefs, hidden shoals and other marine traffic. All boaters should travel with tidal and navigation charts, updated weather conditions, gps, compass, depth
sounder, VHF radio and safety equipment.
The weather on the west coast may seem warm , but the waters
are cold. It is always wise to wear layered
clothing and have rain gear on hand just in case.
Some of the more popular boating sightseeing destinations near Vancouver Island include the wildlife and waterfalls in Desolation
Sound and in Princess
Louise Inlet, the remote islands in the Broughton
Archipelago, the sandy beaches throughout the Broken
Islands Group and the raw ruggedness of Kingcome
Inlet .
