Lake Cowichan The Village of Lake Cowichan is located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The lake community rests on the shores of Vancouver Island`s second largest lake - Cowichan Lake. The lake is one of Cowichan Valley`s most popular recreation lakes. Cowichan Lake is over 31 km (19 mi.) long and enjoys 150 km of shoreline. The Village of Lake Cowichan is the main community on the lake. Other smaller villages on the lake include Youbou, Honeymoon Bay, Mesachie Lake, and Caycuse. The lake is situated in a forested valley surrounded by mountains. Some of the mountains located near the village include Mount Sutton, Mount Vernon, Heather Mountain, Mount Buttle, Mount Holmes, and Baldy Mountain. Many have hiking trails leading to viewpoints. The lake region is a popular destination for many outdoor activities. Some of the more popular activities inlcude swimming, boating, tubing. water skiing, sightseeing, hiking, backpacking, wilderness camping, fishing, wind surfing, canoeing, mountain biking, cycling, golfing, houseboating, and wildlife watching. Some of the main outdoor destinations in the Lake Cowichan region include the sandy beach at Gordon Bay, the wilderness trails in the Carmanah Walbran Park and the river activities on the Nitinat River. There are services important to travelers located in the Village of Lake Cowichan including accommodations, campgrounds, rental companies, tours, guides, restaurants, banks, retail shops, a grocery store, a laundromat, gas stations and some outdoor specialty shops. |
