  • Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park. Rugged and remote, mostly old growth forests - the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park is no walk in the park. It is ,however, one of the most beautiful, rugged, wilderness parks in British Columbia and is the oldest protected wilderness forest on Vancouver Island with twisted 1000 year old cedars clinging to rock cliffs and wrapping around boulders.   • Cowichan River. Fishing, hiking and mountain biking - the Cowichan River is a designated Provincial Heritage River designated for it's Salmon and Steelhead Fishery. The Cowichan River current changes with the seasons from calmness to thundering rapids with trees caught up in the rivers fury causing log jams and sweepers unexpectedly. The monster rapids, the big boys, exist at Marie Canyon and Skutz Falls most of the year.

  • Cowichan River Footpath. 20 km. scenic hike through forests exploring along the Cowichan River, trekking over bridges through lush salal, around fields of ferns draped on top of the forest floor. Backpacking permitted with campsites on trail. Access to trailhead at Skutz Falls off Hwy #18 or at the Cowichan Fish and Game Headquarters on Glenora Rd in Duncan.

  • Gordon Bay Provincial Park. A fresh water lake ideal area for families, couples and adventure seekers who wish to enjoy the outdoors on Vancouver Island's second largest lake. Gordon Bay Provincial Park large white sandy beach area is base to many for swimming, water skiing, wind surfing, sun tanning and canoeing.

  • 66 Mile Trail. 8 mile loop trail through canyons towering over the Cowichan River serving up great scenic river views. Cross over a wooden bridge and the 66 mile trestle. Located off of Hwy #18 on Skutz Falls Rd. Look for trailhead marker.

  • Akela's Trail. A hike trekking through forests with plenty of different flora and wildlife. Access the trailhead located from Marble Bay Rd. off of North Shore Road.

  • Beaver Walk. A relatively long 8 km walk following Cowichan Lake and under the shadows of Mount Baldy. The hike contains many lake views and forested areas. Access from the trail head is located on Marble Bay Rd. off of North Shore Road.

  • B.C. Forestry Research Station. 30 species of trees from around the world planted around Cowichan Lake along South Shore Rd . Located at Masachie Lake.

  • Denninger Scout Trail. A difficult hike up Mt Baldy covering 8.8 km capped off with spanning lake and valley views. The summit is 629 m. with picnic tables at the top. The area is a popular place for wildlife viewing. Access from the trail head located on Marble Bay Rd. off of North Shore Road.

  • Holt Creek Trail. A place of history. A comfortable walking trail along the Cowichan River leads to a viewpoint of the Holt Creek Trestles. Located off of Hwy #18 on Skutz Falls Rd.

  • Kaatz Station Museum. Visit the past as you walk through a mining tunnel with artifacts and by all means take pictures of the 1928 locomotive or of the last wooden caboose used in Western Canada, both on display.

  • Lake Cowichan Scenic Loop Drive. 75 km ( 49 mi.) of paved and gravel logging roads exploring around Cowichan Lake. The route is heavily used by logging trucks. Keep headlights on, slow down and pull over if necessary. Scenic drive has many pull-out areas with mountain and lake views. A remote route touring rugged wilderness country, exploring the deep backwoods while enjoying the comforts of your vehicle.

  • Lakeview Park. A community park located in the heart of Lake Cowichan. A popular location to fish, launch your boat or enjoy a picnic after a family swim.

  • Nitnat Lake. A clear crystal tidal lake that feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Great for swimming and very popular for the wind surfers. Located traveling active logging roads north of Cowichan Lake.

  • Old Wolf's Hill Lookout. Experience the forest and some views of Scout Camp and the surrounding mountains. Access from the trail head located on Marble Bay Rd. off of North Shore Road. It is part of the beginning of the Denninger Scout Trail on Baldy Mountain.

  • Skutz Falls. A popular destination to take the family. The area is a popular area for swimming, picnics and for exploring short hiking trails to the views of Skutz Falls. Lots of wilderness to explore. Located off of Hwy #18 on Skutz Falls Rd.

  • Spring Beach. Swimming hole for many, and some moderate hiking trails to explore. Located on Meade Creek Rd. in Lake Cowichan.

  • Stoltz Pool Loop Trail. A great comfortable walking trail with gentle slopes, great for a leisurely walk exploring the Cowichan River. Located off of Hwy #18 on Skutz Falls Rd.

  • Sutton Creek Wildflower Reserve. A trail leads to fields of dreams. The Douglas Fir trees dominate the sky line and the abundant wildflowers, bloom in rainbow colors.

  • Trans Canada Trail. The Lake Cowichan area is a destination on the Trans Canada Trail route. A small walking portion of the Trans Canada Trail follows the old railway tracks, leading over some bridges and along some trestles from Lake Cowichan to Glenora following the Cowichan River Trail. There is a portion designed for bikes.

  • Venturers Challenge Trail. Extremely difficult steep 5 km round trip hike up Mount Baldy. This hike is a work out. The wilderness experience itself is definitely worth the effort. Access from the trailhead located on Marble Bay Rd. off of North Shore Road.
