An unofficial trail with no name, so we gave it one. The walking
trail follows a dirt path which intersects with other short connector
paths leading explorers though wooded areas, along rocky beaches
and up onto a shoreline ridge looking down at the boats arriving
and leaving from Ladysmith Harbour. Circling high above are seabirds
patrolling their home turf.
The walking trail is an easy grade scenic jaunt exploring the
coastline of Ladysmith. Along the path are bits of history and
many scenic views. On many days the marine activity is heavy with
motor boats, sail boats and commercial logging tugboats hard at
work. From the north part of the waterfront trail there are views
of a working log sorting mill, a marina and of the Wood Islands.
Over the ridge and through the trees and away from the water
the trail connects to a gravel road. If one follows the road south
toward the historic buildings in the distance. The structures
at one time was a train station mainly used for transporting lumber.
A clue the history of the buildings is the old locomotive left
standing on the old railway tracks for all to see.
Not far from the locomotive is the Ladysmith Maritime Museum and Transfer Beach. The museum has a good display of photos and artifacts dating back to the days when forestry and fishing ruled the land.
How to Get to Waterfront Trailhead: Accessing
the trail is easy. Drive toward the ocean and park your car.
