Knight Inlet paddle route involves navigating long, narrow channels closed in by looming cliffs. The route is considered an experienced kayaking adventure with unpredictable winds, changing ocean currents and rough open water paddling.
The scenic kayak route is located off the coast of central-northeast Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The Knight Inlet paddle route is a rugged multi day kayaking adventure exploring canyons, cliffs, beaches waterfalls and historic First Nation villages.
The closest Vancouver Island communities to Knight Inlet are Port McNeill and Campbell River. Port McNeill and Campbell River have marinas located within walking distance of stores and shops. The closest Gulf Islands are Alert Bay and Sointula.
Most who kayak the inlet prefer to book a paddle with a tour group. This is a good idea if this is the first time kayaking on the west coast of British Columbia. A kayak tour group includes lessons, equipment and, most importantly, an experienced, interpretive guide.
Kayak guides also are prepared for unexpected weather, storms and trained in open water survival techniques. A guide also will provide commentary accommodations, meals and information on the history, geography and wildlife in the region.
The Knight Inlet paddle route is very scenic with many highlights. The route is best known for pictographs, wildlife sightings, navigating surge channels and for its looming petroglyphs and cliffs.
There are First Nation Villages located along this route - both uninhabitable and populated villages. During the early spring kayakers can arrange to attend the First
Nations Ookichen Harvest. A wonderful opportunity to experience the traditions and culture of the local First Nation people. Some of the uninhabitable villages are located at Glendale Cove, Port Neville and Minstrel Island.
All artifacts and First Nation grounds are off limits to kayakers unless with special permission from the local First Nation Band. And definitely you should not and do not touch or disturb any artifacts.
Knight Inlet includes some opportunities to visit with islands. Some of the more popular islands include West Cracroft
Island, East Cracroft Island, Minstrel Island and Turnour Island.
The kayak route exploring the inlet includes navigating ocean channels. The most notable channels are the routes prior to entering the inlet like Havannah
Channel, Chatham Channel and Clio Channel.
Knight Inlet canyons and cliffs act like a funnel for winds. The weather can change quickly. Storms blow in and can
turn to gale force winds quickly. A good understanding of the route and sheltered coves is imperative.
The best spots for kayakers to beach camp is usually at the mouths of rivers or on the shorelines of any of the abandoned
logging camps. This best camping is between Minstrel Island and Kelsey Bay.
