Clayoquot Sound Paddle Route
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Clayoquot Sound is located north of the community of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The Clayoquot Sound paddle route includes many opportunities for exploring remote islands, old growth forests, hidden bays and secluded coves.

Clayoquot Sound is located just north of the Pacific Rim National Park. The sound is well known within environmental circles because of the efforts in protecting the old growth forests and wildlife living in the region. Some of the wildlife you might encounter on your paddle could include bears, whales, cougars, sea lions and seals.

Clayoquot Sound is a very popular recreation destination for kayaking, boating, flightseeing, wilderness camping, sailing, fishing and scuba diving.

Many visiting kayakers who explore Clayoquot Sound prefer to paddle along with a tour group. A kayak tour group includes lessons, equipment and, most importantly, an experienced, interpretive guide.

Guides also are prepared for unexpected weather, storms and trained in open water survival techniques. A guide will provide commentary and information on the history, geography and wildlife in the region.

Not all paddlers hook up with a tour group. There are some on the water who are enjoy self guided tours. Many of these kayakers are experienced paddlers and equipped with all the proper equipment like gps, tidal charts and navigation charts.

There are many kayaking destinations worth a visit when paddling in Clayoquot Sound. One highlight destination that many decide to visit are the steaming hot pools and waterfalls in Hot Springs Cove. Another more active destination to visit are the hiking trails exploring old growth forests on Meares Island.

The geography of Clayoquot Sound enables kayakers to choose between two paddle routes. (1) The inner paddle route which explores behind Meares and Flores Islands. It is a protected and sheltered route. (2) The outer paddle route on the far side of the islands is open water and exposed to ocean swells and wind. Paddle both routes and complete the circle tour.

Marine traffic is busy with boats, zodiacs and floatplanes in and around Meares and Flores Islands. The water can be very choppy. The peak season for paddling Clayoquot Sound is from May to August. There are sites for wilderness beach camping on this route. At times a beach landing is required to access the sandy beach.
