Nootka Island Trail - Gold River, BC

Nootka Island Trail is located in Nootka Sound off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. On the island is a wilderness hiking adventure called the Nootka Island Trail. Transportation to the island and trail is only accessible via boat, kayak or floatplane. Most depart from the community of Gold River or Tahsis.

The Nootka Island Trail is over 35 kilometres long (22mi.). The backpacking hike explores along the coastline of the island visiting with private coves, sandy beaches, wetlands, rugged points and jagged cliffs. It is a rugged and, mostly, unmaintained hike which is considered challenging by many and very scenic by most. The hiking trail is a tricky hike due to the rough wilderness conditions, unpredictable weather and ever changing tides.

Planning your daily hiking distances are important on this hike so to time the incoming and outgoing tides. With proper planning, good weather and good equipment the trail should take no longer than 2-4 days to complete based on your group's fitness levels.

Some parts of the hiking trail are maintained by the people of Friendly Cove. Some parts are left to nature. Services along the trail are limited. There are wilderness campsites located along the trail route for overnight camping. There are pit toilets, portable water and garbage disposal facilities located at the trail head only.

All backpackers are required to pack out what they pack in. When arriving on the island make sure to bring some money as the locals charge a landing fee to all visitors who visit Nootka Island to help in maintaining the trail and village services.

How to Get to Nootka Island Trail in Gold River

Kyuquot (Friendly Cove), is located on Nootka Island in Nootka Sound. There is moorage at Friendly Cove for a fee. The trailhead tot he Nootka Island Trail is located in the village. Transportation to the island is best via boat, floatplane or kayak from Gold River or Tahsis on Vancouver Island.
