Garden Parks
Vancouver Island, British Columbia,
Canada
Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada is fortunate to have some world class floral gardens and parks. The floral garden parks include a vast variety of flowers (both local and foreign), shrubs, trees, fountains, ponds and hiking trails. Two trees to look out for that are unique to Vancouver Island are the Arbutus and Garry Oak.
There are two types of garden parks operating on Vancouver Island. There are the community public parks and the not-for--profit or commercial flower park attractions. The public flower gardens are free of charge. The garden park attractions are admission based.
Community parks tend to be small and centrally located in the community. The size of the local flower park is closely related to the size of the community. One of the most beautiful, well maintained and bigger community flower parks on Vancouver Island is Beacon Hill Park in Victoria.
Community parks vary in services. Some of the more common services include picnic tables, sitting benches, paved walking paths and washrooms. Some of the bigger community parks will have restaurants, pools, recreation centres, amphitheatres and museums onsite.
Garden attraction parks are more elaborate and colourful. They are a feature attraction in their respective communities. Today, the number of garden parks on the island is numbering around 20. The parks are bigger, admission based and provide more services and activities.
The garden parks include such extras as tea rooms, restaurants, seed shops, entertainment, hiking trails, coffee shops, concession stands, water fountains, ponds, light shows, gift shops, accommodations, guides and hold special holiday events.
Featured flowers in the spring at many of the flower parks include daffodils, snowdrops, pansies, polyanthus, myosotis
and orchids. Flowering trees in the spring include Dogwood, magnolia
and cherry blossoms.
The summer features arabis, marigolds, English daisys, wallflowers, foxglove,
iris, poppy and fuchsia. In the winter months the Japanese Maples and Purple Beech foliage are focused on.
Many garden parks are open year round. The garden parks are often the centre of attention in their communities during the holidays. The gardens often decorate in
lights, have concerts, provide fireworks and hold gala events.
Some of the garden parks on Vancouver Island are non profit. Most of the proceeds go towards
maintenance of the garden and paying wages to
the staff.
