Duncan,
BC Canada is a recreation community
in the Cowichan Valley,
rich in First Nation history, situated next to the Cowichan
and Kokisilah Rivers, close to the ocean and surrounded by Mount
Prevost, Mount Tzouhalem and the Coastal BC Mountain Range.
The Town of Duncan is considered the central
commercial hub servicing the Cowichan Valley. The village of
Mill Bay marks the southern
border and the Village of Ladysmith
sits on the northern border marking the boundaries of the Cowichan
Valley.
Duncan includes many services important to
travelers from small specialty shops and boutiques in the downtown
core to the big box stores in the outlying areas. Some of the
amenities in the community includes accommodations, restaurants,
tours, banks, grocery stores, laundromat, internet, retail shops,
pubs, gas stations and more.
The revitalized downtown core in Duncan is
very pedestrian friendly. The wide sidewalks are lined with
retail shops, restaurants and specialty boutiques. When downtown
make time to view the First Nation Totem Poles, the Historic
Railway Station and the downtown murals.
The region of Duncan includes the ocean neighbourhoods
of Genoa Bay, Maple Bay and Crofton. Each with a marina, restaurants
and pubs. Crofton is also home to a BC Ferry connecting to Saltspring
Island of the Gulf
Islands.
The community, also referred to as the 'City
of Totems' is decorated with over 70 First Nation's Totem Poles.
Also, take some time to view 'The World's Largest Hockey Stick'
on display on the roof of the Cowichan Community Centre located
at the north end of town.
Other attractions operating in the Cowichan
Valley area include the BC Forest Discovery Centre, the many
local wineries, the Quw'utsun Cultural
and Conference Centre and the many art galleries. The Cowichan
Valley is rumored to have the largest per capita of artisans
in Canada!
Many of the wineries and vineyards are located
in the South Cowichan Valley
which includes the small communities of Shawnigan Lake, Cowichan
Bay, Mill Bay, and Cobble Hill. The village
of Cowichan Bay, BC is a fishing village. It is a big tourist
attraction with it's quaint shops, great seafood and outdoor
tour adventure companies. All of these communities forming what
is proudly known as the Cowichan Valley.
Hiking is limitless. One of the
favorites is the hike to the top of Mount Tzouhalem or Mount
Prevost to enjoy views of the whole Cowichan Valley. The Cowichan
River Trail is a long hiking trail following the shores
of the Cowichan River leading to Skutz Falls.
Nearby are some very exciting
mountain biking trails and backpacking hikes. The valley is
a popular destination for many who enjoy eco activities like
kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, fishing, golfing, hiking, mountain
biking, cycling, hang gliding, boating, water skiing, and so
much more.
