- Ocean Fishing: Seymour Narrows, Cape
Mudge and the coves and bays of Discovery Passage is some of
the prime areas and considered the hot beds for migrating Salmon
since it is the intersection of Johnston Straight and the Georgia
Strait, hence the claim, "Salmon Capital of the World."
Campbell River fishing is one of the few places where 5 species
of Salmon call home - Chinook, Chum, Pink, Sockeye and Coho
Salmon.
- River Fishing: The fresh water
fishing experience in Campbell River also flourishes because
of the many lakes and rivers near by. The steelhead fishing
is, bar none, a top notch fishing experience and usually starts
in early fall with spring acting as the peak fishing season.
Coastal Cutthroat can be hooked in from the shores of the Campbell
River and in any of the surrounding estuaries. Some of the finest
river fishing in the Campbell and Quinsam Rivers is from Fall
to Summer for Trout. Fresh fish year round... sort of makes
it tough to feel sorry for us huh? Yummy!
- Golf: The surrounding region offers 10
different golf courses to challenge the handicap. Closer to
Campbell River, BC there are 3 golf courses directly located
in the area. Storey Creek Golf Course, Sequoia Springs Golf
Course, Saratoga Beach Golf Course are all within a short drive
from Campbell River city centre. Each course offers different
golfing challenges and environments to play the game from. One
of the Campbell River golf courses has been recognized by, Golf
Digest as a 4 star golf course! All courses are set back in
natural environments where the deer roam the fairways, birds
chipping to every par and your friends chuckling at every triple
bogie. Ours do, anyway.... Four !
- Rotary Seawalk: Along, our favorite highway,
the Oceanside Route is the paved 6 km (3.5 mi.) scenic walk,
run or roller blade following the coastline looking out onto
Discovery Passage escorted by the Bald Eagles, high above, in
the air. Wood Carvings depicting the wilderness and the historical
environment of the area line the pathway. One of the best paths
on the island for activity and scenery.
- Caving: Splunk this! Oceanside Route
south leads you to the Horne Lake Caves. Start climbing north
and there is the Artlish River Caves and the Huson Caves. Further
west are the Upana Caves, near Gold River. So much underground
around, you better make time to see above ground. It is just
as fascinating.
- Hiking and Walking: Scenery is so hypnotizing..
idn't? (our crew's own word). Elk Falls Provincial Park and
it's 25 metre (80 foot) waterfall into Campbell River Canyon...
a handful of misty magic rising up into the air. Beaver Lodge
Forests Lands proud of it's groomed trails covering the lush
1,028 acres of forest. Natures version of a place to leave the
rat race behind. If only for a day... some peace and quiet.
- Whale Watching: Campbell River, BC area
is home to the worlds only Killer Whale sanctuary, Michael Biggs
Observatory in Robson Bight in the upper Johnstone Strait. The
World Wildlife Federation rated the Campbell River and Quadra
Island area as one of the Top 3 Whale Watching areas in the
world! The prime time for Whale Watching in Campbell River,
BC is from late June to late fall. Come explore the wilderness
setting in the bays and inlets of Johnstone Sound with Bald
Eagles soaring overhead, Whales breaching in the distance, Seals
playing, Sea Lions barking and porpoises patrolling the vast
Campbell River, BC waters observing the Grey, Humpback and Killer
Whales in their natural environment.
- Sea Lion Watching: Mitlenatch Island
is an unusual island off of Campbell River BC, that is home
to many species of sea birds and mammals. Many days Mitlenatch
Island looks like it is moving when viewed from a distance but
after closer examination it is clear the movement is from the
wall to wall masses of sunbathing Sea Lions moving about on
Mitlenatch Island. Sea Lions Barking on Mitlenatch Island can
be heard for miles on same days attracting attention from passing
boats.
- Scuba Diving: Under water thrill seekers
listen up! The Jacques Cousteau Society rated diving in Discovery
Passage second to only diving in the Red Sea. Ya think it has
anything to do with the abundant marine life we enjoy here and
the navy vessel HMCS Columbia that was decommissioned in 1996
so you frogs can explore even more. We a thinking it might.
- Backpacking: Strathcona Park is the grand
daddy park on Vancouver Island. Rainforest breeding thick undergrowth
forested floors, rumbling rivers and, still, is one of the few
areas left where wildlife roam the lands freely. Pack up the
house, load it on your back and head out on the many miles of
trails of this magnificent nature park.
- Sea Kayaking: Paddle the shoreline sharing
the waters of the Discovery Channel with the Alaskan cruise
ships, Killer Whales and Sea Lions while guided by the soaring
Bald Eagles overhead.
