Campbell River, BC, CanadaCampbell River is located on the west coast of British Columbia on Vancouver Island, Canada. The waterfront community is located on the shores of the Discovery Passage surrounded by islands, islets and amazing ocean scenery. The waterfront of Campbell River is decorated with marinas, boats, tour companies, shops, parks, homes and pebbled beaches. From the shore one can watch sailboats, fishing vessels, cargo ships and cruise liners coming and going, night and day. Closer to town are many of the services important to travelers like accommodations, banks, gas stations, internet, laundromat, restaurants, grocery stores, repair shops, galleries, attractions and gift shops. Because of the easy access to oceans, rivers, sandy beaches and forest lands there are many outdoor activities enjoyed in Campbell River, BC, Canada. Some of the main activities in the region include hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, birdwatching, caving, golfing, fishing, boating, sailing, floatplane tours, rafting, wildlife watching tours, scuba diving, kayaking and beachcombing. Campbell River, however, is best known for fishing - both fresh water and ocean. Precisely the reason why the community is also referred to as the "Salmon Capital of the World." But it is not just Salmon which are caught off the coast of Campbell River - oh no - halibut, cod and snapper are also up for grabs. For the fresh water fly fisherman the rivers in the region provide an opportunity to catch trout, salmon and steelhead. For a complete fishing experience there are many fishing guides operating in the community. Hiking, biking and backpacking are also recreational activities enjoyed in the region. The Seawalk is one of the easier walkways in Campbell River. It is very level, well maintained and paved making it baby stroller and wheelchair friendly. It is a very popular community walkway lined with wood carvings, beaches and benches. The more extreme adventurer will enjoy the rugged hikes and wilderness backpacking adventures in Strathcona Park. In the winter months skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling are popular activities. In the back country on the outskirts of the community are gravel roads - it is these roads that become snowmobile routes. For skiing and snowboarding adventures people travel to Mount Washington near Courtenay. It is only a 30 -45 minute drive from Campbell River. Campbell River, BC is a great base camp for touring the surrounding communities and islands in the area. In the downtown core of the community is a BC Ferry Terminal connecting Campbell River with Quadra and Cortes Islands. Or you may decide to stay on Vancouver Island and travel south on Highway #19A to a pair of large sandy beaches called Saratoga and Miracle Beaches. |
How to Get to Campbell River, BC, Canada:From the south end of Vancouver Island - from Victoria to Campbell River - travel Highway 19A north for about 6 hours (264 kilometres or 164 miles). Arriving from the north end of the island - it is 235 km (146 mi) south from Port Hardy. Campbell River Airport receives daily flights from Vancouver International Airport. |
