Bamfield,
Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada:
The small wilderness community is settled
on the shores of Bamfield Inlet, tucked away in old growth forests
and neighbouring some of Vancouver Island's most beautiful, remote
sandy beaches. During the peak fishing and tourist seasons the
local marina that services the resorts, the community and the
visitors, of both, East and West Bamfield is active with yachts,
kayaks, floatplanes and sailboats. The inlet separates Bamfield
with the west side mainly occupied by waterfront resorts and the
east side occupied by mainly residential homes, a marine research
centre, some resorts and a few community stores.
The two Bamfields are connected by a water
taxi carrying passengers from one side to the other. East Bamfield
is situated on the mainland and across the Bamfield Inlet is West
Bamfield which is also referred to as Mills Peninsula.
Some of the charm of West Bamfield is that there are barely no
cars operating and the transportation of choice is by foot. A
casual stroll down the gravel backroad that connects the resorts
of West Bamfield leads to a popular beach destination - Brady's
Beach. While wandering closer to the resorts along the waterfront
visitors view the coastline marine activity from the short boardwalk
lining the shore.
Fishing and outdoor adventure tourism thrive
in the community of Bamfield, B.C., Canada because of the forest
and marine environment is so raw and untouched. Mainly, because
the Village of Bamfield lives and plays in the Pacific
Rim National Park . South of the East Bamfield is the northern
trailhead to the, much talked about, West
Coast Trail (WCT). Neighbouring the WCT trailhead is the beautiful
sandy beach of Pachena Bay complete with crashing waves, campsite
and storm tossed logs piled way up high. North of the WCT is one
of our favorite short, wilderness camping backpacking trips along
Keeha Bay Trail. A mud hike,
walking along deadfall trees, clinging to tree roots and hopping
mud holes... all part of the fun trekking to a large, beautiful
remote sandy beach - Keeha Bay Beach.
Bamfield is a west coast community accessed
by traveling along a long gravel logging road by vehicle or by
arriving aboard a floatplane or by boat. Often in the peak seasons
the marina is filled with yachts and sailboats moored for the
night in anticipation of exploring up and down the coastline of
Vancouver Island and visiting places like the Broken
Islands Group.
Bamfield originally was the home to the Huu-Ay-Aht
First Nations and, still today, the tradition of the
First Nation's people history and culture thrives.
Nestled quietly, the pulse of Bamfield continues
to be an important part of the "Heart of the Pacific Rim".
By the way... rugged wilderness means cellular phone reception
is very limited and gas stations are open when they are open.
