Port Alice, BC, Vancouver Island

Port Alice is a small community located on the northern end of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. In 1965 the community moved from inland to the point on the Neroutsos Inlet creating British Columbia, Canada's first "instant" municipality. The municipality was employed by the fishing and logging industries.

Port Alice is located off the beaten track (Hwy #1) between the larger communities of Port McNeill and Port Hardy. The region is rich in wilderness surrounded by forests, ocean and an abundant number of wildlife. The mountains, lakes and forests have created the a natural environment for outdoor activities to be enjoyed.

Some of the activities enjoyed in Port Alice include kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and boating. Harvey and Gooding Cove, Side Bay and Klaskino Inlet are popular boating and kayaking destinations. Beaver Lake and the waterfront walkway on Neroutsos Inlet are hiking destinations. Rumble Mountain Range is an internationally recognized Mountain Biking destination. Victoria Lake, Rupert Arm, Marble River and Beaver Lake are the main wilderness retreats in the region. Some have picnic tables and pit toilets on site.

Not only are outdoor activities attracting attention, there are natural attractions drawing crowds too. Although some may be harder to locate than others as signage is limited. Some of the natural attractions located deep in the woods surrounding Port Alice are accessed by rough gravel roads. Some of the notables for viewing are the Eternal Fountain, Devils Bath, and the Disappearing River. Also while exploring the wilderness region it is very possible to view wildlife like Black Bears and cougars.

The Village of Port Alice has a limited selection of amenities important to travelers. However the basic amenities are nearby like accommodations, restaurant, gas station, general store and ATM.


How to Get to Port Alice, BC

When approaching Port Alice, BC from Victoria (south Vancouver Island), always try to travel the Oceanside Route from Parksville on as it is more scenic. From Campbell River travel Hwy 19 ( North Island Hwy). Continue to drive 200 km (124 mi) to Port Alice, BC - located just north of Port McNeill or 25 kilometres south of Port Hardy.
